Residents of Spain are taxed their worldwide income, while non-residents are taxed only on Spanish-sourced income. Determining residency status for taxation purposes can be complicated depending on one’s situation, but generally you’re considered a resident if you live in the country more than 183 days during the calendar year.

Spain has a progressive tax rate system. On average, single workers in the country pay up to almost 40% of their income in taxes and social security contributions. This is more than the OECD average but lower than countries such as Belgium, Germany and France.
